About Us

Constituted in 1964 by the Ministry of Steel, the Joint Plant Committee (JPC) was established to formulate guidelines for the production, allocation, pricing, and distribution of iron and steel materials in the country.

Following the de-regulation of the Indian steel industry in 1992, JPC underwent a major transformation - evolving from a regulatory body into a facilitator and knowledge center for the Indian steel sector. Since then, JPC has been dedicated to developing and maintaining a comprehensive, credible, and non-partisan databank on the Indian iron and steel industry-the first of its kind in the nation.

Today, JPC stands as the only institution officially empowered by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, to collect, compile, and disseminate authentic data on the Indian iron and steel industry.

The data and analysis provided by JPC serve as vital inputs for policy formulation, research, and strategic planning by the Government and industry stakeholders.

In recognition of its commitment to quality and reliability, JPC has been accredited with ISO 9001:2015 certification. Upholding its mandate, JPC continues to play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, informed decision-making, and sustainable growth within the Indian steel sector.

As per Notification No. S.0. 1868(E) issued on 25 April 2025, under the Collection of Statistics (CoS) Act, 2008, JPC serves as the Primary Agency for iron and steel data collection.

Under the provisions of the said CoS Act, 2008 the following officers have been designated.

  • Statistics Officer & Adjudicating Officer: Deputy Director (Statistics Division), Ministry of Steel
  • Appellate Authority: Deputy Director General (Statistics Division), Ministry of Steel

Mission

The Joint Plant Committee (JPC), under the Ministry of Steel, is mandated as a primary agency to collect, maintain, and under the CoS ACT 2008 disseminate comprehensive, accurate, and timely data on the Indian iron and steel industry, its mission is to support evidence-based policy formulation and promote sustainable development of the sector through systematic data management, analysis, and research

In fulfilment of this mission, JPC shall:

  • Maintain an updated and comprehensive database on production, consumption, prices movement, and other key industry parameters in accordance with the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008.
  • Keep detailed, unit-level and geo-spatial information on iron and steel plants, and related infrastructure across India.
